Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Financial assistance: Teaching Assistantships, Research assistantships, and other student funding

Financial aid is administered in the form of Teaching and Research Assistantships. Stipends for full teaching assistantships will be at least $20,500 for 2008-2009. These assistantships include full tuition remission. Teaching assistant duties vary widely and may involve assisting a faculty member in a course or as instructor in an introductory course. Occasional Research Assistantships are available and associated with faculty grants. Research assistantships are not awarded on the basis of financial need. They are awarded to students who show promise in the area of research being undertaken.

Renewal of TAs and RAs is subject to the students. remaining in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward their degree. Award and renewal of funding is not automatic: students must request funding at the time of their application, and students desiring a second year of funding should request it to the Director of Graduate Studies. The deadline for applications for first year program funding is March 1.

Information on competitive scholarships is open to all physics graduate students and is available in the Scholarships & Fellowships. Students are encouraged to apply for funds and scholarships. Faculty will assist students in developing funding proposals. Be sure to take note of funding application deadlines, and allow sufficient time to discuss funding proposals with your advisor.
