About Drexel's S-STEM Scholarships
Asst Professor of Physics Dr. Roberto Ramos (PI) and Chemistry Department Head Prof. Lynn Penn (co-PI) have been awarded funds in the amount of $460,000 from the National Science Foundation for the purpose of assisting academically talented, financially needy students in city of Philadelphia to earn B.S. degrees in physics or chemistry from Drexel University. With a degree in either of these disciplines, a student is well prepared to enter the workforce as a full-fledged scientific professional. This program, referred to by the acronym S-STEM (for Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), will provide $40,000, pro-rated over five years, to 10 selected students who enter Drexel and remain enrolled as full-time physics or chemistry majors in good standing. To qualify, students must be U. S. citizens or permanent residents and must meet the criterion of financial need as determined by the U.S. Department of Education. The scholarship award provided by the S-STEM will be in addition to, and will not detract from, the financial aid package (typically composed of a mixture of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study monies) provided to the student by the Office of Financial Aid at Drexel. The S-STEM scholarships are additional funds intended to reduce the financial burden of pursuing a B.S. degree at Drexel.
To be considered for S-STEM scholarships, seniors must take SAT (or ACT) exams and formally apply to Drexel in addition to meeting the need-based criterion. Through a series of informational meetings and workshops, interested students will be coached through the process of applying to Drexel and applying for financial aid. Recipients of the S-STEM scholarships will be well-mentored throughout their college years. Tutoring, academic counseling, and other resources will be provided to ensure the good performance of the S-STEM scholars and to spur them to graduation in a timely fashion.
About a Drexel Education in Physics and Chemistry
A Drexel education in physics or chemistry prepares students for professional careers in biophysics, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, meteorology, astronomy, electronic device design and manufacture, chemical processing, information technology, etc. Drexel graduates are sought after by private companies, universities, and government laboratories. The co-op program at Drexel, one of the best in the country, allows a student to interrupt his or her studies for three, planned six-month periods to take physics- or chemistry-related employment. The co-op experience not only provides earnings and experience to the student but often leads to a permanent position after graduation.

- Scholarship Information Sessions for High School Students and Parents. Nov 17, 2007 and Nov. 30, 2007. Students and parents were treated to refreshments, a tour of the Physics and Chemistry classrooms and research laboratories and an Open Forum with current Drexel undergraduate majors and faculty to discuss physics and chemistry career opportunities.
- Informational Meeting for High School Science Teachers. Oct. 29, 2007, Monday at Stratton Hall Rm 304, Drexel University. We had a good turnout and appreciate the attendance of area high school science teachers who are helping us identify potential candidates for our S-STEM Scholarship Program.
