NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)

Synopsis:
The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) awards fellowships (also called GSRP Training Grants in what follows) for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development.
National Physical Science Consortium - Dissertation Support Program

Synopsis:
A fellowship program that provides support while the graduate student conducts dissertation research. Students should apply in the year prior to the beginning of their dissertation research program, but not before they can describe their intended research in general terms.
AERA Minority Fellowship Program in Education Research

Synopsis:
The purposes of the program are to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Fellows will be required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the grant period. At the time of application submission, the dissertation advisor will attest to the proposal constituting research for the doctoral degree. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements. This program is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders).
Department of Defense - National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Synopsis:
The Department of Defense (DoD) will offer approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2007, to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of the disciplines (Physics is one of them)

Synopsis:
Through the NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awards fellowships for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development. This twelve month award includes a required internship at the NASA Center affiliated with the NASA sponsored research. The program supports approximately 300 graduate students annually.
NASA - NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF08)

Synopsis:
NASA has issued a call for graduate fellowship proposals to the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) program for the 2008/2009 academic year. This call for fellowship proposals solicits applications from accredited US universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines. Awards resulting from the competitive selection will be made in the form of training grants to the respective universities.
NASA - Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program

Synopsis:
pplicants must be applying for or be within the first three years of a full-time graduate program within a STEM discipline, Persons who have advanced to doctoral candidacy are ineligible; students must be citizens of the United States, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories; students must be members of an underrepresented group that includes women, minorities and disabled persons; GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Awardees may not participate in any other federally funded fellowship or scholarship program.
NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships (AAPF)

Synopsis:
The NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships provide an opportunity for highly qualified young investigators within 3 years of obtaining their PhD to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. Fellows may engage in research of observational, instrumental, or theoretical nature, in combination with a coherent educational plan for the duration of the fellowship. The program supports researchers for a period of up to 3 years with fellowships that can be taken to the institution or national facility of their choice. The program is intended to recognize young investigators of significant potential, and provide them with experience in research and education that will establish them in positions of distinction and leadership in the community.
APS - Minority Scholarship

Synopsis:
Each year, the APS Committee on Minorities in Physics (COM) acts as the selection committee for this scholarship which attracts many excellent applicants. The award consists of $2000 per year for new minority scholars, and $3000 per year for renewal students to be used for tuition, room & board, and educational materials. In addition, each physics department that hosts one or more APS minority undergraduate scholars and assigns a mentor for their student/s will receive a $500 award for programs to encourage minority students.
NASA Post-doctoral Program

Synopsis:
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly talented national and international individuals to engage in ongoing NASA research programs at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institution. These one- to three-year Fellowship appointments are competitive and are designed to advance NASA's missions in space science, earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
National Academies - Research Associateship Program

Synopsis:
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the National Research Council (NRC) offer the Resident Research Associateship Program to provide postdoctoral and senior scientists and engineers with opportunities to conduct research on projects, largely of their own choice, which are compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratories, thereby contributing to the overall research efforts of the federal government.

Synopsis:
Summer Internships for Undergraduates at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), offers summer research positions (9-10-week term) to students currently enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor's degree. Each intern works with a scientist on an individual research project. Potential areas of research include observational and theoretical cosmology, extragalactic and galactic astronomy, interstellar medium and star formation, laboratory astrophysics, supernova and supernova remnants, and planetary science.

NASA Academy

The NASA Academy is a unique summer experience at the university level for developing future leaders of the U.S. Space Program. The program is an intensive, resident, ten-week summer experience with laboratory research work, a group project, lectures, meetings with experts and administrators, visits to NASA Centers and space-related industries, technical writing, and presentations.Rising junior, senior undergraduate or at the early graduate level in accredited U.S. college or university as of May of the program year; B average (minimum); major in engineering, science (physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, etc.), math, computer science or other areas of interest to the aerospace program; US citizen or permanent resident (as of May of the program year).

NSF - Petascale Computing Resource Allocations (PRAC)

In 2011, a new NSF-funded petascale computing system, Blue Waters, will go online at the University of Illinois. The goal of this facility is to open up new possibilities in science and engineering by providing computational capability that makes it possible for investigators to tackle much larger and more complex research challenges across a wide spectrum of domains. The purpose of this Petascale Computing Resource Allocations (PRAC) solicitation is to invite research groups that have a compelling science or engineering challenge that will require petascale computing resources to submit requests for allocations of resources on the Blue Waters system. Proposers must be prepared to demonstrate that they have a science or engineering research problem that requires and can effectively exploit the petascale computing capabilities offered by Blue Waters. Proposals from or including junior researchers are encouraged as one of the goals of this solicitation is to build a community capable of using petascale computing.
